For farm traction, LEF uses a wood gas fueled tractor. Though draft animals would be a “less industrial” choice, they eat a large portion of the agricultural product, and on a global scale, intensive animal farming is a significant driver of climate change.

The gasifier pictured converts wood chips into a combination of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, which then power a small tractor. LEF members constructed the gasifier themselves since such machines are not readily produced for sale.
